Helen Moss: Biography

BA (Hons) Fine art Degree
Newcastle University
Helen graduated with a 2:1 in 2007
Helen's interest in abstraction and the urban environment began following a visit to a photographic exhibition of the same theme at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in 2004. Inspired by this she took photographs of the subway and was amazed by the character of the space. The cinematic beauty of the artificial light and the geometry of the space caused her to spend the rest of her degree researching these characteristics through photography model making, slide projection and painting.
Painting has always been her favourite artistic process and Helen wanted these processes to inform her paintings and ultimately her final show. Helen spent many months developing her painting technique and experimenting with painting mediums to achieve the brilliance of light found within the subway. Helen's paintings are built up gradually in glazes of colour. She enjoys painting in layers and letting old layers show through whilst obscuring others. For Helen, her paintings succeed when there is a balance between line and colour and abstraction and reality.

Open Studio events at the Biscuit Factory are an opportunity for the public to meet the artists at work in their studios, to discuss their work and very often purchase a piece. Helen enjoys being able to discuss the processes and inspiration behind her paintings and has been greatly encouraged through the sale of many pieces at Open Studio events. People often contact her privately by email to view and buy work following an Open Studio event.
